Bunions

The pain of having a bunion can be alleviated with surgery. Putting on your favourite pair of shoes may be a challenge for you.

Dr. Jagsir Singh, our Bunion Specialist, sees many patients with bunions. Bunions are one of the most common ailments that podiatrists treat. More than half of all women in the United States suffer from bunions, a common foot deformity. Swelling and protrusion of the big toe joint are the hallmarks of bunions (Metatarsophalangeal Joint). The skin on top of the wound may be puffy and inflamed. In either case, the ability to do so can be learned or inherited (you got it from your family).

There's nothing worse than having a bunion and having to wear any form of footwear. As you walk, the joint in question flexes with each step. Having a huge bunion makes it harder to walk. There is also a possibility of bursitis (inflammation). You may find yourself with your big toe sliding beneath or even over your second toe. Additionally, the skin on the bottom of your foot may thicken and become inflamed.

These two toes may become misplaced, resulting in an overlap between the second and third ones. Your ability to walk may become more difficult as the severity of your bunion worsens. Rheumatoid arthritis and chronic pain are also possible effects.

Bunions are usually treated conservatively with larger and softer shoes, pressure-relieving pads, or medications. Surgical intervention is required if this fails.

A Bunion Procedure

You'll have to have your big toe re-aligned during a bunionectomy in order to get rid of the bulge on the joint's inside. The use of a local anaesthetic for same-day bunion surgeries is common (with no overnight stay in the hospital). Swelling and discomfort following surgery are to be expected. Months of pain and swelling are possible.

Hammertoes

A hammertoe deformity can affect the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes. To evoke the image of a hammer, the toe's middle joint has been bent. If left untreated, hammertoes can become inflamed and painful, demanding surgery.

A hammertoe's central joint or toe tip might develop corns and calluses. They may also have difficulty finding shoes that fit if they are suffering pain in their feet or toes. Muscle imbalance or improperly fitting shoes are two common causes of hammertoe.

If the toe is allowed to remain bent, bone changes may occur and the joint of the toe may become stiff.

If the toe is addressed while it is still malleable, a simple soft tissue tendon release may be all that is needed to repair the problem.

As the toe becomes more curled and less flexible during the treatment, the abnormal bone formation will be removed. When this operation is completed, the joint will usually be able to function normally again.

After removing the bony protrusion and straightening the toe, corn will no longer be an issue.
